The rapid evolution of simulation software, user expertise, and cheap, fast computers has led many simulation experts to explore ways to introduce more realism into simulations and to simulate more complex physical behavior. One way to get closer to realistic behavior in simulation is to include more than one physical aspect in a coupled approach—where one aspect of physics (for example, structural response) affects and is affected by another (for example, fluid flow). Simulations which incorporate multiple physics in this way are termed multiphysics simulations, and the individual physics involved are said to be coupled. Multiphysics simulation can be loosely coupled or tightly coupled, depending on how intimate the effects of one aspect has on the other as the solution progresses.
